Set in the beautiful 13th century Maunsel House near Somerset, we follow the fortunes of five highly competitive amateur cooks as they battle below the stairs to win the Country House Cooking Contest and claim the prize money. During the week, viewers get a glimpse of life inside one of the country’s oldest houses as well as the lifestyle of one its oldest families. Our amateur chefs must produce food which is, quite literally, fit for a King. Every day, Baronet Sir Benjamin Slade invites his friends, who are Lords, Ladies and the landed gentry, into his home to feast on the food our amateurs have produced. Hosted by the fiery John Burton Race, the five hopefuls must throughout the week prepare food for the various functions the Baronet is hosting. Each episode results in an emotional sacking as the worst performer in the kitchen is sent home, their experience over and dreams of the prize money shattered. Has John bitten off more than he can chew in trying to mould one of our five keen cooks to win this culinary challenge? In the last episode, the last two of our frazzled amateur chefs arm themselves for the final challenge, to prepare a starter and a main meal of their own choice for a black tie dinner. A surprise guest joins the diners for their amateur chefs final meal before John pronounces who will be crowned King or Queen of the Country House Kitchen and receive the prize money.
