This is the version I grew up with. It's so packed with flavour and just the thing to warm you up on a cold winter's night. A good handfull of Parmesan and some crusty bread...very satisfying. I've omitted the pasta and upped the cabbage in the one pictured to lower the carb content.
1.
In a large pot, saute the bacon and the onion in the oil for a few minutes.

Add the Garlic, parsley and sage and cook a few mins more.
3.
Add the celery, carrot and leek.
4.
Then the chopped tomato, 2 diced Potatoes and 2 whole ones.
5.
Then the Basil and the beans.
6.
Cook for a few minutes stirring constantly.
7.
Add the hot stock, and salt and pepper and bring to boil.
8.
Cook covered over a low heat for 1 3/4 hours.
9.
Add the cabbage and continue cooking for 45 mins.
10.
Add the pasta 12 mins before the end of cooking time.
11.
Serve with lots of Parmesan cheese
