A really easy and quick delicious tasting dessert. Best served hot with icecream! Yum!


  • 60g butter, softened

  • 125g castor sugar

  • 1 egg

  • 2 heaped Tb cocoa powder

  • 1 C self-raising flour

  • 1/2 C milk

  • 6 drops vanilla essence

  • For sauce:

  • 2 heaped Tb cocoa powder

  • 1/2 C firmly packed brown sugar

  • 1 3/4 C boiling hot water


  • 1.

    Preheat oven to 180 degrees.

  • 2.

    Grease an oven proof dish

  • 3.

    Cream butter and castor sugar.

  • 4.

    Add egg and vanilla, mix well.

  • 5.

    Sift together SR flour and cocoa powder.

  • 6.

    Add flour/cocoa mixture alternatively with milk to the creamed butter/sugar/egg mixture.

  • 7.

    Mix well until all combined.

  • 8.

    Pour into oven proof dish.

  • 9.

    Mix together brown sugar and cocoa and sprinkle over the top of the cake mixture.

  • 10.

    Using the back of a spoon, gently pour over the boiling water.

  • 11.

    Place in oven for approximately 25 mins.


Place a tray on the shelf underneath the dish to ensure you catch anything that might bubble over (helps keep the oven clean!!)
If you dont have castor sugar, normal sugar will do but ensure you definately use brown sugar for the topping (which eventually becomes the sauce).
