A very easy to make sweet dish, perfect for afternoon tea.


  • 3 cups of self raising flour

  • 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda

  • 3 cups of castor sugar

  • 1.5 cups of cocoa powder

  • 1.5 cups of buttermilk

  • 4 eggs

  • 1.5 cups of warm water

  • 175g melted butter

  • Icing

  • 100g butter

  • .3 cup water

  • .3 cups castor sugar

  • 1.3 cup icing sugar

  • .5 cup cocoa powder


  • 1.

    Grease a deep 27cm x 33 cm baking dish and line it with baking paper.

  • 2.

    Sift the flour, soda and cocoa into a bowl, add buttermilk, sugar, eggs water and butter.

  • 3.

    Beat on low speed of mixer for 1 minute and then on medium until mixture is smooth. Pour into cake pan.

  • 4.

    Cook in a moderate oven , 180c for 45 minutes or until cooked. Cool on a wire rack.

  • 6.

    Combione butter, water adn castor sugar in a pan, stir over heat wothout boining, until sugar dissolves. Sift in icing and cocoa then stir in the hot butter, mix until smooth. Cover the icing and let it chill for 1 hour or until it thickens.

  • 7.

    Ice cake and cut into squares.
