Mexican Beef Kebab

bbq beef rolls on a bed of spiced rice


  • olive oil

  • onion peeled and chopped

  • 60ml red wine vinegar

  • seasoning ( salt and black pepper)

  • 2.5ml oregano

  • 2.5ml cumin

  • 2.5ml cloves

  • 2.5 cinnamon

  • garlic

  • 850g rump steak cut into 2.5 cubes

  • 250g button mushrooms

  • Spiced rice

  • 250g long grain rice

  • salt

  • black pepper

  • 6 cloves

  • 5cm cinnamon stick

  • 1 bay leaf

  • 2.5ml saffron or tumeric

  • 10mls milk


  • 1.

    Heat the oil in a pan and add onions ad cook untl golden. Stir in vinegar, seasoning, oregano, cumin, cloves, cinnamon and garlic. Cover and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes then allow to cool.

  • 2.

    Lay the meat cubes in a dish and brush with oil and sprinkle wth pepper.

  • 3.

    Pour the cool basting sauce over the steak and leave in the fridge to marinate for2/4 hours.

  • 4.

    Thread the steak cubes onto skewers alternately with the mushrooms and brush with the marinade then cook on the BBQ

  • 5.

    Spiced rice

  • 6.

    Cook as directed adding salt, cloves, cinnamon stick, bay leaf and black pepper

  • 7.

    Dissolve the saffron or tumeric in the milk and stir into the rice.

  • 8.

    Remove the cinnamon stick and bay leaf before serving.


You can add skinned ad slied tomatoes, cucumber and/or bananas to add colour as a garnish.
