This simple, classic recipe makes the best apple crumble that will definitely be a hit on the dessert table!

Ingredients

  • 4 large green or red apples (peeled,cut into 2 cm dice)

  • 125 grams white or wholemeal flour

  • 150 grams raw sugar

  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon powder

  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (freshly grated better)

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

  • 1 block unsalted butter (1/2 cup)

  • 1/2 cup almonds (roughly diced)

  • 1/2 cup sultanas (if desired)

Method

  • 1.

    Preheat oven to 190c.

  • 2.

    Peel and then dice the apples into rough 2cm cubes.

  • 3.

    Prepare a 20cm (8 inch) square baking dish with a coat of butter. Do this buy melting the butter and spreading it with a pastry brush or simply do it with your fingers.

  • 4.

    Cover the bottom of baking dish with the cubed apples and ½ cup almonds, also add the raisins if desired.

  • 5.

    Combine 1 cup of flour with ½ cup of sugar. Add 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg and ¼ teaspoon of salt. Mix it all together well.

  • 6.

    Dice up one block of butter (1/2 cup) and soften in a small pan on low heat. Add to dry ingredients. Mix everything together again very well, try not to leave large clumps of butter. Spread topping over the apples and then bake for 40 minutes until golden brown.

  • 7.

    Take out of oven and let it rest for around 7 minutes. This will let the crumble set and go slightly crispy.

  • 8.

    Serve on plates or bowls with a dollop of whipped cream, custard or your favorite yoghurt.
