This isn't your average fish and chip recipe! Needless to say, you will enjoy chowing down on this great lunch or snack. 


  • Fish:

  • 350 g fresh herring

  • 2 eggs

  • 175 ml crisp ryebread (sour) crumbs

  • salt

  • butter for frying

  • Chips:

  • 1 large sweet potato, cut into strips

  • 6-7 potatoes, cut into strips

  • Seasoning:

  • 3-4 tbs oil

  • 1/2 bunch dill, chopped

  • 1/2 lemon's zest

  • 1 tsp garlic, grated

  • black pepper

  • salt

  • Dip:

  • 4 tbs mayonnaise

  • 2 tbs low fat sour cream

  • 1/2 tsp Dijon mustard

  • lemon zest, grated

  • lime zest, grated

  • black pepper

  • salt


  • Fish: :

  • 1.

    To prepare the fish, cut the stomach open and pull out the intestines. Rinse thoroughly and dry with kitchen paper. Crush the bread into a bowl and add salt. Then break two eggs into another bowl and give them a quick stir. First, add some salt on top of the herring and then dip the fish in egg, then into bread crumbs. To avoid mess, use one hand to dip the fish into the egg, and the other to coat them with the breadcrumbs.

  • 2.

    Pan fry in butter and place fried on some kitchen paper to remove excess fat.

  • Chips: :

  • 1.

    Peel and cut the potatoes and sweet potatoes into sticks. Mix all ingredients of the marinade together the season the sticks evenly. Bake in 200° C oven for approx. 30 minutes. Serve with pan fried herrings and dip.

  • Dip::

  • 1.

    Mix the ingredients together and taste. Serve with sweet potato & potato strips.
