A warm savoury snack, filled with delicious layers of cheese.


  • 2 thick slices of good-quality white bread such as sourdough

  • Unsalted butter

  • 8 thin slices of beaufort or gruyère

  • 4 thin slices of jamón ibérico

  • Freshly ground white pepper


  • 1.

    Preheat oven to 200°C or 160°C fan-forced.

  • 2.

    Butter each slice of bread and turn half the slices butter-side down on a tray.

  • 3.

    Cover these with a layer of cheese and jamón, and then repeat the layers. Season with pepper.

  • 4.

    Top with the remaining slices of bread (butter-side up).

  • 5.

    Place the tray in the oven and bake the sandwiches for 15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and the bread is golden and crisp.
