I just found the world's most decent flavoring for savoury oatmeal porridge, and that is with the usage of dark brown Korean/Japanese miso. The miso adequately covers up the bitterness taste from the oats' bran and makes it taste like chicken porridge. Mornflake oats gives this porridge a grainy rice-like texture as compared to other brands that do not. I know there has been an ongoing race to find the most decent savoury flavor for oatmeal porridge and I have found it!

  • 1 cup Mornflake brand instant oats(this brand creates the best grainy texture similar to rice porridge)

  • 2 cups water

  • 1/2 cup textured vegetable protein or mini round soya meal, or minced meat

  • 4 tsp dark brown Korean or Japanese miso paste

  • packaged mixed vegetables of corn, carrots and peas

  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • dash of celery seeds

  • dash of ground black pepper to taste

  • optional drops of liquid smoke

  • optional dash of extra virgin olive oil

  • 2 cups water for soaking vegetable protein

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1.

Soak textured vegetable protein in a saucepan of 2 cups hot water mixed with 1 tsp salt

  • 2.

In another saucepan, add 2 cups water

  • 3.

Ensure the water is at about 30 degree Celsius to prevent lumps in porridge

  • 4.

Add a dash of celery seeds and 1/2 tsp salt into the water

  • 5.

Sprinkle oatmeal evenly into the water ensuring they are evenly soaked

  • 6.

Turn on the heat to boil without stirring

  • 7.

When water begins to boil, add packaged vegetables

  • 8.

Stir constantly until porridge has thickened before turning off the heat

  • 9.

Add soaked textured vegetable protein(or cooked mince meat), miso paste, freshly ground black pepper for some heat, optional liquid smoke and mix well

  • 10.

Transfer porridge into a large bowl

  • 11.

Sprinkle some optional extra virgin olive oil for some olive aroma to serve
