I just found the world's most decent flavoring for savoury oatmeal porridge, and that is with the usage of dark brown Korean/Japanese miso. The miso adequately covers up the bitterness taste from the oats' bran and makes it taste like creamy chicken porridge, which makes it suitable to add other savoury toppings such as chopped spring onions and stir-fried vegetables. Mornflake oats gives this porridge a grainy rice-like texture as compared to other brands that do not. I know there has been an ongoing race to find the most decent savoury flavor for oatmeal porridge and I have found it!

  • 1 cup Mornflake brand instant oatmeal(this brand creates the best grainy texture similar to rice porridge)

  • 2 cups water

  • 4 tsp dark brown Korean or Japanese miso paste

  • optional drops of liquid smoke

  • optional chopped spring onion

  • optional dark sesame oil

  • optional stir-fried vegetables or nori flakes

  • optional roasted sesame seeds

  • 1.

Fill a pot or saucepan with water

  • 2.

Ensure the water is not too cold but at about 30 deg Celsius to prevent lumps from forming in porridge

  • 3.

Sprinkle the oatmeal evenly into the pot and turn on the heat to boil without stirring

  • 4.

When the water begins to boil, stir constantly until the porridge has thickened before turning off the heat

  • 5.

Add miso paste to taste and optional liquid smoke and mix well

  • 6.

Transfer porridge into a large bowl

  • 7.

Add optional spring onions, dark sesame oil, stir-fried vegetables(or nori flakes) and roasted sesame seeds to serve
