Rinse lentils several times with warm water. Add to pot along with 3 glasses of water and simmer on low heat for about 60 minutes.
In the meantime, heat the oil and put cumin seeds, fry around 10 seconds. Then, in the same skillet add chopped onion, garlic and chili pepper. Fry everything till the onion is golden color, then add coriander, turmeric powder and stir well.
Put this onion and spice mix into the boiling lentils, stir well and keep cooking.
After about 40 minutes. When the lentils become soft and mixture is almost smooth, add tomato paste, butter, salt and cook everything for about 5 minutes more.
