A soup that is a meal in itself


  • 500 gm chuck steak, diced

  • 1 tbslp butter

  • 1 tblsp olive oil

  • 1 medium brown onions, finely diced

  • 6 cups boiling water

  • 6 beef stock cubes (dissolved in the water)

  • 6 tsp mild paprika ( can use smoked if you want a spicier soup)

  • 140 gm tomato paste

  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms

  • 1/2 cup pasta shells

  • 2 tblsp finely chopped parsley

  • shaved parmesan to serve

  • Crusty bread to serve


  • 1.

    Heat oil and butter in a large pot, add steak and onion. Seal meat and lightly brown onion. Add sliced mushrooms and allow to sweat down slightly.

    Dissolve stock and paprika in water and add to pot. Add tomato paste and pasta. Stir well. Bring to boil and reduce heat slightly Allow to boil gently until pasta is cooked.

  • 3.

    Stir in parsley and serve. Top with parmesan shavings and serve with buttered crusty bread.
