Great easy to make soup. For some people a very filling meal that can be frozen and used for a quick easy meal on a cold winters day.

Ingredients

  • 500g of yellow or green split peas (I like 50/50 myself)

  • 1 Large ham hock, or 1/2 kilo of bacon bomes.

  • 10 cups of water or 2.5 ltrs of Chicken or Vegetable stock.

  • 1 large onion, chopped.

  • 3 cloves of garlic, chopped.

  • 2 carrots, chopped.

  • 3 Sticks of Celery, chopped.

  • 50 grams butter.

  • White pepper to taste.

Method

  • 1.

    In a large pot sweat the vegetables of in the butter, untill onion is soft.

  • 2.

    Add Ham and stock(water) which ever. Bring to boil and simmer for 1 to 1 1/2 hrs until meat can be easily removed from bone. Shred meat and return to pot.

  • 3.

    Rinse split peas in a sieve, until water runs clear(this could be done while ham is cooking) and add to pot. Stirring occasionally to avoid sticking to bottom of pot, until peas soften and soup thickens. You can serve how it is, or using a stick blender, blend until smooth.

Notes

Serve with sour dough toast.
You can also add potatos if you wish.
