"Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe" is one of my all time favourite movies, so much so that I was completely obsessed with it and it began my love affair with all things Southern. I've been making these for years - and they really are delectable. They also contribute to my big claim to fame: Some years ago I made the aquaintance of Michelle Williams and Heath Ledger through work and I made these for them one night with some fried chicken and gravy - AND they loved it! : )

  • 1 Egg - beaten

  • 1 cup Buttermilk

  • 1 cup Self Raising Flour

  • 1/3 cup Cornmeal

  • 1/2 tspn Salt

  • 6 - 8 Green Tomatoes - cut into 1/4" slices

  • Bacon drippings or Vegetable Oil

  • 1.

Mix egg and Buttermilk in a shallow dish

  • 2.

Mix flour, cornmeal, and salt in another shallow dish

  • 3.

Working in batches, dip tomato slices into egg mixture - let excess drip off

  • 4.

    Coat with flour mixture

  • 5.

Fry in hot oil or bacon drippings in a large heavy frypan until browned on both sides.

  • 6.

    Drain on absorbant kitchen paper

  • 7.

Serve with Corn dip or chili maionnaise or the traditional way with Milk gravy (I'll put that up if anyone wants it)

Don't crowd the frypan or they'll go a soggy.
Bacon dripping is totally optional but the flavour it imparts is so good!

Green tomatoes are red tomatoes that haven't gone red yet! I think you will find them wherever tomatoes grow. I usually have to ask the grocer if there are any green ones out the back that they didn't put in the shop - and I usually get them for free : ) And I do hope you come to Australia one day Huda - I will make you anything you like!

Wow - what a story - and I have tomato plants growing in my vege patch now so will make sure I pick some green when they're bigger so I can give this a go! Anything that's good enough for Heath Ledger is good enough for me!!!!
