Japanese style Tuna Tataki

I love tuna, one of my favourite fish! Tuna tataki is a must order dish when I dine out at Japanese restaurants. Always wanted to try making it myself, first attempt was a few month ago, a leaning to failure try, look ugly but taste ok. >.< Decided to make it again, up to you to decide if it's look better this time, but it tastes good!!

Ingredients

  • Tuna................sashimi quality, need to be reasonably good size

  • Olive oil.............some

  • Dry spice:

  • Black pepper………….pinch

  • Salt…………………………pinch

  • Garlic powder………..pinch

  • Dressing:

  • Lemon juice……………1/2 tbsp

  • Orange juice…………..1/2 tbsp

  • Light soy sauce……….2 tbsp

  • Mirin………………………1 tbsp

  • Sake……………………….1/2 tbsp

  • Sugar……………………..1 tbsp

  • To garnish:

  • Shallots

  • Coriander

Method

  • 1.

Rub dry spice around Tuna, leave to marinate for 20 mins

  • 2.

Dribble oil evenly around marinated for a thin coat

  • 3.

Heat up a non-stick pan (without oil), carefully place Tuna on it, once face-down side is coloured, change to a different side to colour. Repeat for all 6 sides.

  • 4.

After all 6 sides are nicely coloured, place on a clean plate then put in freezer for 10 mins to rest.

  • 5.

    Mix dressing ingredients together.

  • 6.

Carefully slice tuna, dress with finely chopped spring onion and coriander, pour dressing over it.

Notes

Be careful when slicing the tuna, the outer layer can be very flaky...as you can probably tell in the picture, I've stuffed up a few slices =P
