When my husband and I met in our conversations about tastes in common, I told him I did not much like cod. When I got married and came to Portugal, he took me to a restaurant in Setúbal. He told me to prove Cod with Cream I'd like. I did not like. I love! I never thought so fond of cod, one day!


  • 600g potatoes

  • 2 boiled cod fillets, skinned and bones in flakes

  • 2 onions cut into strips

  • 4 cloves garlic, cut in thin

  • 4 tablespoons (packed) parsley olive oil

  • salt

  • pepper

  • Cream sauce:

  • 2 tablespoon (packed)

  • 2 tablespoons butter (tablespoon) plain flour

  • 500ml milk

  • salt

  • pepper

  • nutmeg

  • 200ml cream

  • 2 tablespoon (packed) grated parmesan

  • For the gratin:

  • 1 tablespoon (packed) bread crumbs

  • 3 col. (packed) grated parmesan

  • 1 / 2 tsp (tea) of paprika

    Peel and cut the potatoes into small cubes. Season them with salt. Fry them in oil until they are firm but clear. Put them to drain on paper towels. Line the bottom of a baking dish, the potatoes have dry. On them, place the chips baked cod. Reserve. In a skillet, place olive oil, garlic and fry until the onion to be transparent. Add salt, pepper and parsley. Put the onions and garlic chips on the cod and drizzle with the olive oil in skillet.

    Prepare the cream sauce.

    In a saucepan, melt the butter. Add the flour and let it cook. Gradually add the milk gradually, stirring constantly, until it is creamy. Add salt, pepper and nutmeg. Add the cream and grated cheese. Allow to have a strong sauce. Correct the salt, if necessary. Place the sauce over the layer of onion and garlic.

    For the gratin:

    Mix all together and sprinkle over the whipped cream. Bake gratin.
