An Italian dessert whose shape is thought to have been inspired by the rounded roof of the famed Duomo cathedral in Florence. A round bowl is lined with sliced Madeira cake moistened with an alcohol such as maraschino or Marsala. The centre is filled with cream, candied orange or citron or almonds and hazelnuts and chopped chocolate, then topped with slices of cake to enclose the filling. The zuccotto is chilled until firm, then turned out and dusted with alternating segments of cocoa and icing sugar.
