A crisp cake made by cooking batter on a special–purpose waffle iron, which gives the waffle a honeycombed pattern. The batter is poured into the heated base and the hinged top seals the batter, which is cooked until crisp and golden brown. Traditionally served hot with a sweet syrup, such as maple syrup, and butter, cream or ice cream. Belgium waffles are smaller and thicker and are often served sprinkled with icing sugar or served with strawberries or strawberry jam and cream.
