A nutritional cereal grain that grows in cool, wet climates and provides food for both humans and animals. Oats are rich in soluble fibre and they contain more protein and fat than other cereals. In cooking, oats are most commonly eaten at breakfast time as porridge, in muesli and granola mixtures, or they may be added to muffins, cookies, crêpes, cakes and bread. Oats are also used in beers and other beverages. Particularly in Scottish cooking, they are used frequently in stuffings, to thicken soups and stews, in Athol Brose, a traditional Scottish dish of oats and honey, in oatcakes and in haggis.
