A patty of ground beef, grilled and served between two bread buns, often with a salad such as lettuce, cheese and tomato. Contrary to its name, the hamburger has never contained any ham, but chicken, pork, fish or vegetables may replace the beef. Thanks to the efficiency of American marketing, the hamburger is now the most prevalent fast food item around the world. It is believed to have originated in the Baltic area as a beef cake and was adopted by the sailors of Hamburg who took it with them to America. It was later referred to as ‘Hamburg steak’, which was eventually abbreviated to ‘hamburger’.
