Middle Eastern in origin, halvah is a sweetmeat made with sesame seeds and honey. Some are flavoured with chocolate or vanilla, while others may contain pistachios, walnuts or almonds. Halvah is sold in blocks or slices from some supermarkets or delicatessens. Not to be confused with halvah is halwa, an Indian sweet made with grated carrot and white pumpkin or lentils. These are cooked in milk, mixed with nuts, then sweetened and perfumed with cardamom.
