Gentleman’s Relish

Gentleman’s relish is a paste made from a mixture of anchovies, butter, herbs and spices used to spread on pieces of buttered toast. The most famous is Patum Peperium, which was invented in 1828 by John Osborn and is sold in a distinctive white pot. It is used for making savouries such as Scotch woodcock and anchovy toasts.
