Gateau

The French word for cake, although when used in English it usually refers to something elaborate and beautifully decorated—a cake with its best dress on. In some instances, gateau refers to a savoury dish, such as a potato cake. Famous gateaux include Black Forest gateau, gâteau Saint Honoré, named after the patron saint of pastry cooks, and gâteau l’Opera, named in honour of the Paris opera.
