Generally, small balls of dough cooked in a liquid base, such as a soup or stew, and traditionally served with roast or boiled beef. Dumplings can also be deep–fried, steamed or boiled. Asian dumplings are made with chopped pork or prawns and vegetables wrapped in a thin sheet of dough, then steamed or boiled. Dumplings may also be sweet, simmered in a dessert sauce or fruit juice or the dough used to encase a piece of fruit. Italian gnocchi are also a type of dumpling.
