Melbourne girl Zoi Condos began her career at the Grand Hyatt, learning her trade as a chef before her passion for baking took over. Soon after, Zoi headed for the Frisco Bay where she worked for family friend and author, Joanne Weir, as a recipe tester, later returning to Melbourne to work closely with Joanne as a teacher’s assistant. Following this Zoi did a stint as assistant pastry chef at Loretta Sartori’s Distorta Designer Cakes, which lead to her being offered the experience of a lifetime: a pastry internship at the Union Square Cafe. Her most recent achievement, before opening the deliciously inviting Sweet Source, was becoming sole pastry chef at the Richmond Hill Cafe and Larder.
Zoi’s first food memory is of eating a wedge of watermelon, aged three, while in Greece at her grandparents’ village. Her favourite restaurant is California’s Chez Panisse for the amazing and inspiring food by Alice Walters. Days off are best enjoyed reading, relaxing or doing nothing at all. Chef’s she looks to for inspiration include Loretta Sartori for her extensive knowledge and passion for really good cake. Her advice to us cooks at home: “Keep it simple.
