Robert Harwood is an IT administrator from Perth, and a contestant in series 3 of The Great Australian Bake Off.
If ever you’re invited to Robert’s house for a dinner party, be sure to know that the cake for dessert has been an all-night labour of love. For perfectionist Robert, baking the ultimate creation means he often burns the midnight oil. “I finish work at 3pm and sometimes I will bake through to 4am the next day,” he says. “I’ll then get up and decorate through to 12pm and then it’s eaten on a Saturday night.”
Married for five years, and having a keen interest in baking since he was a 10-year-old cooking with his mum, Robert’s strength is creating over-the-top bakes that highlight his chocolate modelling and decorating skills. “I’ve always loved art and creating things and with cake decorating, and how to incorporate all the elements to create something that is architecturally sound,” explains Robert. “My go-to bake would be red velvet with white chocolate ganache and from that you can build really incredible structures.” With a biomedical science background, Robert is now in IT and his workmates reap the benefits of his bakes. But creating a masterpiece for Matt Moran and Maggie Beer is nerve wrecking. “I’m really terrified of presenting my bakes in front of the judges,” he says. “I like to be perfect but the time constraints in the Bake Off Shed means sometimes things don’t always go to plan.”...
