Doctor Peter is a self-described bread tragic. Wholemeal, rye, fruit, sourdough: you name it. A loaf a day keeps this doctor away from supermarket bread. He hasn’t bought a loaf of bread in two years and has lovingly cultivated his own sourdough starter.
“I saw a BBC series about bread and I just became obsessed with everything to do with bread,” says Dr Peter, who works as a GP and a skin cancer specialist.
But the thing that makes him go weak at the knees is Irish soda bread.
Explaining why he wanted to go on the Great Australian Bake Off, Dr Peter – who is a father of two and has been married for 31 years – says: “I can’t sing, I can’t dance and I can’t build a kitchen. But I can cook in one! I enjoy the quaintness of baking. Like everyone, I had the Nan who baked a basketful of treats to take to the football so it’s always provided me with fond memories.”...
