Langton’s Restaurant & Wine bar
Melbourne girl Nicky Riemer’s passion for cooking, started at an early age. A childhood spent in hotels all over the world, found her in differing kitchens - where she watched in wonder at the chefs’ techniques and preparations.
However, it was after completing a degree in Chemical Engineering that she truly realised her calling and an apprenticeship with the Southern Pacific Hotel Corporation prevailed.
Her final year, was spent under mentor Stephanie Alexander before moving to the Richmond Hill Cafe and Larder. Then it was off to Mecca in Southgate and Mecca Bah at Docklands before finding her way to Langton’s.
An early food memory, is of fresh strawberries and whipped cream in a restaurant in Vienna – the plump and luscious strawberries complemented by the gentle vanilla-scented, fresh, whipped cream forever embedded in her mind.
France-Soir rates as a favourite restaurant, for its simplicity and the best way to finish up a leisurely day off.
Nicky finds inspiration, from fellow chefs Stephanie Alexander and Alice Waters as well as interested apprentices and friends who take the time to cook for her.
Her wise words for us cooks at home: “salt, butter and extra virgin olive oil make the world go round.”
