Matthew is an Australian diving champion who is best known for being one of the first openly gay sportsmen to ever win Olympic Gold.
At the 2008 Beijing Olympics Matthew received the highest single-dive score in Olympic history, with 4 of the 7 judges awarding him a perfect 10 for his final dive.
Mitcham originally competed as a trampoline gymnast representing Australia at the World Junior Championships, he was subsequently spotted by a diving talent scout and soon became the National Junior Champion in diving, and in 2005 won his first Senior National Title. Since then Matthew has represented Australia at the 2006 and 2010 Commonwealth Games and the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympic Games.
In addition to releasing his highly publicised autobiography entitled; Twists and Turns, Matthew has appeared on the cover of various publications such as The Advocate and DNA, was the ‘Chief of Parades’ of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras after being declared the 2008 Australian Sports Performer of the Year, appeared in the second season of the television series Greatest Athlete Australia and also featured on Talkin' 'Bout Your Generation.
Mathew admits that he is pretty simple cook with his specialty being omelettes. He says that it doesn’t make it easy given he is scared of hot things & sharp items in a kitchen as they make him feel nervous.
