With his blue eyes and charming smile, Kurt Neumann is disarmingly normal. But normal isn’t the right word. There’s something unmistakably local about him. He’s the boy next door, a home-grown Canberra boy. Turn the conversation onto his hometown and you’ll detect a quiet sense of pride. Kurt spent 2004 in Canada but otherwise his career has been Canberra based. He was sous chef at The Ottoman Cuisine and then Artespresso, before becoming head chef and partner at the new Alto Tower Restaurant. The renovated restaurant at Telstra Tower has reopened under new management, and Kurt’s goal is to take the former tourist trap and give it back to the Canberrans. But why here? With Sydney so close, why stay in Canberra? Because he loves the challenge, and so far the public reaction seems to affirm he’s made the right choice.
Kurt’s first food memory is of his grandmother preparing traditional German lunches at their coastal home. His favourite restaurant is Sydney’s Bistro Moncur for the honest and consistent food.
