It really was a case of the chicken coming before the egg for Barb. “I was exhibiting chickens at my local show as I used to breed them, and my friend said why don’t you put cakes into the competition,” laughs Barb. “So I did, and I won prizes! And that was my first baking experience.” She then started making elaborate birthday cakes for her two daughters, and it wasn’t long before the local scout groups received word of her mouth-watering biscuits. “I bake like crazy for the kids’ annual Scouts District Camp,” says
Barb, who has a background in Applied Science and enjoys the science behind baking. “That is the most stressful three days ever! For most of the camps I make around 30 dozen biscuits.” She is looking forward to having her bakes judged by Matt and Maggie, however, but is daunted by the feedback. “I’m not nervous, just more worried about receiving criticism and I’m still pinching myself that I’m actually here!” she says. “I guess the one thing I’ll be taking into the Bake Off Shed is to always have a plan B.”
