As summer rolls around and the silly season creeps in, many are fretting about drawing the short straw on preparing this year's Christmas fare. Celebrity chef Miguel Maestre shares his top tips on how you can save time and still create a delicious feast.
There's good news for all yuletide cooks as meal creator and delivery service My Food Bag, fronted by Miguel Maestre, introduces easy-to-prepare festive season feasts with all the trimmings, that's sure to impress and leave enough time for some backyard cricket on Christmas Day.
The limited edition My Christmas Food Bag Menu features canapés, mains, sides and desserts enough to sate even the deepest yuletide cravings.
Here, Miguel shares a few time-saving tips so you can enjoy more time with your loved ones.
1. Shop smart
Order in your ingredients before Christmas Day. Hams, for example, can be bought and stored in advance. This will help avoid last minute decision making and minimise wastage (but leave enough for leftovers the next day of course!). Try this Mandarin-Marmalade and Brandy Glazed Ham recipe by My Food Bag.
2. Prep is key
Use a preparation plan. Work out what needs to be done and when and this will save you hours of stress and panic, I swear! First step, get started with all of the sides and sauces for the big feast which can be made ahead of time, like the turkey stuffing or glaze for the ham. You can even start on dessert, whether it be mixing ingredients for a delicious Christmas Pudding or Aussie Pavlova.
3. Have everything in place
Our recipes are designed to ensure you are equipped with all of the ingredients and portions needed. Stock up and get all of your utensils ready in advance, and a delicious Christmas fare will be on the table in no time! My go-to kitchen gear is made up of a meat thermometer, electric carving knife, disposable foil trays for roasting, a baster and most importantly, plastic containers for any leftovers.
4. Involve the family in the kitchen
You’ll appreciate the extra hands and it’s a great way to spend quality time together in between present unwrapping. Even the little ones can help with whipping cream for the pavlova or buttering the potatoes. My Christmas Canapés are a great way to involve your family and friends.
5. Take your time
Recipes are step-by-step for a reason, especially for the Christmas menu, as it requires a lot of multi-tasking and different cooking times. It’s not easy to cook a ham, turkey, potatoes, vegetables and dessert all at the same time! Give yourself a break and remember the festive season should be festive.
