You can now order popcorn with a crunchy insect topping

Deliveroo have created a new, protein-based popcorn recipe that will give you more crunch for your buck.

In a world first, you can now order your popcorn with a selection of crickets and ants for that little something special. For only $1, the food delivery service have created a unique homage to the The Lion King - literally adding real insects to the popcorn for added crunch - and protein.

The addition of the crickets and ants comes as part of the recent food trend which has seen many incorporating the insects into their diet in powders, liquids and even whole as a crunchy snack.

Bugs have become a more accepted part of the average diet, with its natural high source of protein, fibre and fatty acids as well as having ecological benefits.

Unlike other meat industries, the insect farming industry produces significantly less greenhouse gases and uses less water and space - offering a more sustainable source of natural protein.

Deliveroo will be launching the popcorn on Tuesday 23rd July via the Deliveroo Editions on their app, and will be delivering to both select cinemas and homes to really connect viewers to The Lion King diet.

While the ants and crickets are the star of the show, the bug popcorn is available in a variety of flavours. Customers will be able  to choose from either lemon and herb ants or plain roasted crickets dusted with cricket powder.
