The best dairy-free, vegan ice cream from the supermarket

As more people are turning to soy and almond milk options in their coffee, there's now a rise in vegan and healthier ice cream options popping up on supermarket shelves. We take a look at the big players now going dairy-free...

As the old adage goes, 'we all scream for ice cream!' and now we all really can, thanks to some of the biggest brands in Australia who are getting inclusive, making products for those who can't digest dairy, are watching their weight or are enjoying a plant-based diet.

"Consumers are looking for food options that are healthier, lower in sugar, fat, and carbs, at the same time we are also a nation of ice cream lovers. The availability of the new range of ice creams means that Aussies are now given a wider variety of options to suit their dietary preferences,” says Dietitian and Nutritionist, Susie Burrell. Here are some of the best on shelves at the moment:

Magnum Dairy Free Classic and Almond

If you are vegan, you can now enjoy both almond and vanilla-flavoured Magnum ice creams. There's everything you'd expect from a Magnum - creamy, velvety ice cream encased in smooth, rich chocolate. The almond flavour even has crunchy slivers of almond melted into the topping. Delicious!

Cornetto Vegan Vanilla

After a successful trial in Italy, the Cornetto now has a vegan option and it's sitting on Aussie supermarket shelves. Not only is the ice-cream completely free from dairy, but the cone is also gluten-free, which means the coeliacs among us can enjoy this ice-cream cone, too.

Weis Raspberry & Coconut Dairy-Free Bar

Weis bars are synonymous with summer, and the great news is you can now get the raspberry flavour without the dairy. Made from coconut cream, the consistency is smooth and sweet, and the tangy raspberry ice block cuts through the sweet. This Weis bar is also gluten-free and vegan-friendly.

Ben & Jerry's Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert

This iconic ice-cream brand has gone the extra mile to ensure their new offering isn't confused with ice-cream, labelling it instead, a 'non-dairy frozen dessert'. While this is not the most organic descriptor, we can attest that the flavours are much more pallatable. Featuring flavours like coffee caramel fudge, peanut butter and cookies and coconut seven-layer bar, you won't feel like you're missing out on the chunky Ben & Jerry's goodness.
