The S. Pellegrino World’s 50 Best Restaurants

Last night the S. Pellegrino World’s 50 Best Restaurants were unveiled at Freemason’s Hall in Covent Gardens, UK. First published by UK trade magazine Restaurant in 2002 and now in its 8th year, the S. Pellegrino World’s 50 Best Restaurants is a highly anticipated event among leading chefs all around the globe. The list, compiled annually by a group of 837 prominent food writers, critics, publishers and commentators, features some of the world’s most innovative restaurants as well as some true stalwarts.

El Bulli and the Fat Duck retained their 2008 positions as one and two on the list. It is El Bulli’s fourth consecutive year in the top spot. With the restaurant said to attract up to 2 million booking queries each year, and space for only 7,000 diners, we can assume that securing a table at the fine diner just became more difficult.

Tetsuya’s is also back on the list, coming in at number 17. Tetsuya’s was also named continental award winner for Australasia.

There were nine new restaurants included in this year’s top 50, including Sydney’s Quay restaurant (coming in at number 46). Peter Gilmore, executive chef at Quay, said “It’s an incredible honour and hugely exciting to be recognized internationally in this way.”

Other awards went to Marcus Wareing, at the Berkeley (UK), was voted Breakthrough Restaurant of the Year, while Noma chef-owner Rene Redzepi picked up the Chef’s Choice Award. Joel Robuchon, French chef and restaurateur, picked up the Lifetime Achievement Award.
