The Great Vegemite Chocolate Taste Test: Yum or Yuck?

It's the most talked about chocolate flavour combination ever. So what does Cadbury's new Vegemite Chocolate actually taste like? We put it to the test here in the LifeStyle office. And the verdict is....

When Cadbury announced they were launching a new flavour combining our nation's most loved breakfast spread and chocolate, the Twittersphere (and our tastebuds) went into meltdown. Described as 'Dairy Milk chocolate with smooth flowing caramel and a vegemite filling,' needless to say opinion was immediately divided.

Was the rumoured release even real or an elaborate social media hoax? Would the unlikely mix of flavours work together?

So we figured there is only one surefire way to find out the truth. We made it our mission to get a block of the chocolate and sampled it among the troops in the LifeStyle office.

Here (drumroll please).... is our verdict:

- Helen: Thumbs Up
"I liked it. Could it be improved?  Yes – more vegemite! Right now it tastes like another salty caramel choccy."

- Tessa: Thumbs Down
"Two of my favourite things separately – not good together."

- Marilou: Thumbs Down
"Thumbs down from me! I wanted to taste the vegemite in it, and when I did, it reminded me of when I had tamarind candy as a kid. I had nightmares about tamarind candy."

- Lucy: Thumbs Down
"If you’re going to do it, do it properly. Cadbury wussed out with this one – it’s just a salted caramel centre with a hint of vegemite."

- Mark: Thumbs Up
"Yum. I’d spread the block on my toast in the morning if I could."

- Ruth: Thumbs in the Middle
"It reminds me of the Simpsons episode where Homer creates the 'Tomacco' - a hybrid of tomatoes and tobacco. It is awful, but everyone gets addicted, and keeps coming back for more, because they don’t know if it’s good or horrible."

Thumbs Up: 8
Thumbs Down: 8
Thumbs in the Middle: 2

NOTE: The Limited Edition Chocolate was due for official release on June 1 but is already available on certain supermarket shelves around the country. We bought ours from Coles!

OH and PS. There are 3 more new flavours coming soon and we are going to be all over that Salted Caramel like a rash.

Whilst both brands are halal certified , I refuse to purchase any of their products . Why support companies that bend over to a minority group through a halal tax so they build mosques in our communities yet the aged cannot get basic care . Pack sizes also were reduced yet the price wasn't . Why did cadbury close for 5 weeks ? Because people woke up to consumers being shafted .

Didn't mind it, tasted better than expected however it leaked terribly into the wrapper and is quite messy and sticky if not consumed in one go.
