Plan the perfect Christmas Day at the beach this year by following these handy tips.
It's the great Aussie tradition - Christmas on the beach. Whether it's a yearly occurrence for you or your family is considering shifting the celebrations surfside for the first time ever, here are some tips you should consider to make the day run seamlessly.
Pack a feast
An outdoor Christmas may mean you favour fresh, seasonal healthy recipes over more traditional fatty roast meals. Make the most of Australia's abundant seafood by stocking up on fresh fish, prawns, crayfish and oysters to really treat yourselves this year.
Choose dishes that travel well and won't fall apart on your trip to the beach. Also think about how you'll eat them - a delicate pavlova may seem like a great idea at home, but on the beach it could turn into a sandy crumbly disaster.
Make sure you bring a chilly bin to keep your cool foods at safe temperatures, not to mention ensure your tasty tipples stay cold!
Look after your health
Australian summers can be incredibly hot no matter where you are in the country, and on the beach you'll be exposed to the elements and more at risk of sun damage.
Protect yourself and your loved ones by preparing a sun-smart kit to keep on hand as you lounge in the warm rays.
Make sure everyone has a hat, sunglasses, protective clothing in breathable fabrics and provide shade with a sun umbrella. Remind your friends and family to reapply sunscreen regularly, especially after swimming, and stay hydrated with plenty of cool water.
Keep kids (young and old!) busy with plenty of sports equipment such as a beach cricket set, frisbee and football. Consider bringing along a portable stereo to blast the tunes while you celebrate the most festive day of the year.
