A member of the Kmart Pie Maker Recipes, Tips and Ideas Australia Facebook group shared her husband's discovery, and the post blew up immediately within the pie maker group.

The eclairs got more than 500 comments and more than 1500 likes from excited home cooks, who were amazed at how easy the traditionally daunting dish is to make in a sausage roll maker.

"Omg that's definitely getting my machine out of the cupboard. I've always put off that pastry as it scared me. Thank you so much," commented one group member.

Another wrote, "well that fixes any piping problem, doesn't it?"

Here's how it's done:

Ingredients:

  • 1/3 cup water
  • 1/3 cup plain flour, sifted
  • 40g butter, cubed and room temp
  • 2 eggs, room temp
  • Pinch of salt

To begin, you will need to make your choux.

Melt your butter, water and salt together in a small pan over medium heat.

Bring to a simmer, and then slowly add the flour, mixing until completely combined.

Return the pan to the heat and stir until a ball is formed that comes away from the edges of the pan. Move the choux to a bowl to cool.

Once cooled, using a wooden spoon or paddle mixer, add in eggs one at a time until the mixture comes together - "it will be smooth and shiny."

Divide the pastry dough evenly into four and place it into the sausage roll maker sections. Cook for about 18-20 minutes. When done, remove from the machine and trim, then allow to cool on a rack.

Pierce one end of your pastry tube and fill with the cream or custard of your choice. Melt some chocolate in the microwave and dunk your pastry for a chocolate eclair.

Now what's next? Got a Sausage Roll Maker recipe you'd like to share?
