We caught up with 2012 MasterChef star Amina Elshafei who will be joining Turkish chef Somer Sivrioglu for a one off collaboration dinner as part of the Crave SMH Sydney International Food Festival.

Where did you grow up? And when did you realise you wanted to be a chef?
I was born in Saudi Arabia however raised in Australia from the age of four. I wanted to be more involved with food in my high school years.
What projects or ventures are you currently working on?
I was part of Masterchef series 4 2012. Currently, I am working on a six month column with the Australian Women’s Weekly, starting my own cooking classes, Masterchef Live in October, and working with Somer at Efendy for a night for the Crave International Food Festival.
What does it take to be a successful chef?
A love for food, interest in learning more about food and be a strong team player
Is there one dish you still struggle to get right?
Artichokes are certainly not my friend!
What is your signature dish?
Stuffed Snapper, okra and beef stew, bibimpap.

Who or what inspires you in the kitchen?
My parents are by far the most influential and inspirational people when I am in the kitchen. Their ethnicities and love for food has given the most insight and education about food especially with uncommon ingredients.
What is your biggest food indulgence?
Chocolates, rice, watermelon, garlic!
What is your best tip for home cooks?
As a home cook I always say to cook from the heart, because the food cooked with love has the best results
