'Tis the season to eat, drink and be merry. So, if you feel like expanding your horizons when it comes to wine, here are some fantastic on-trend wine styles to serve your guests. We guarantee they'll be a talking point!
Stocking the classic red and white selection is all well and good, but if you want to experiment with your wines this Christmas, there are a few avenues you can explore. Jon Yarnall, Head of Marketing at Vintage Cellars shares his insights on the latest trends:
The great Chardonnay renaissance
No longer just the number one tipple of choice for Kath & Kim, Chardonnay is enjoying a revival.
"Vintage Cellars is seeing a great revival of this Australian favourite," says Jon.
"From the cool climate chardonnays of Yarra Valley to the warmer climate chardonnay of Margaret River, Australian’s are falling back in love with this buttery wine."
With Australian diners making more informed and conscious choices about their food and drink, it's no surprise to see the demand for organic wine on the rise.
"Australians are looking for the purest form of wine and we are seeing many winemakers coming on board and developing their skills here," says Jon.
His personal recommendation? "Look out for one of our favourites - Vanya Cullen," he says.
Sparkling red wine
It is not an Australian Christmas without a sparkling red wine.
"Taking the boldness of an Australian shiraz and blending it with the elegance of a sparkling wine, you have the ideal Aussie sparkling. The perfect pairing for your Christmas meal on a hot summers day," says Jon.
Sake, like Japanese whiskeys, has been rising in popularity during 2018. This trend is expected to continue on into 2019.
"The Japanese cuisine with the balance between delicate, yet skillful food is also seen in sake," says Jon.
"Sake, being one of the only drinks you can serve hot or cold and perfect for food pairing, makes it an outstanding choice for Christmas."
