Lismore Fire Brigade

Facts about Lismore Fire Station which is 100 years old!

NSW Fire and Rescue Lismore station officer Ian Grimwood said after the Molesworth St site was gazetted for a fire station in 1888, construction of the classic "station with soul" started in 1910.

"In 1910 the NSW Board of Fire Commissioners was established so Lismore came under their control," he said. "They commenced building of the Lismore Fire Station in 1910 and it was completed in 1913."

Lismore Fire Brigade was formed in 1896 and over the decades, hundreds of fire fighters have rushed to thousands of fire callouts in the region from the station since 1913.

Mr Grimwood said in the 17-year period until the current station was built, the brigade operated from a temporary shed on Molesworth St.

"We are celebrating 100 years of the building, but the life of the building is the people who work out of it and protect the community, the environment and the businesses of Lismore," he said.

The centrepiece of celebrations, to be attended by NSW Fire and Rescue Commissioner Greg Mullins, will be a classic 1920s British-made Dennis fire engine.

Originally based at the Lismore station in the 1930s, the vintage tanker is now owned by a Clunes collector.

Mr Grimwood said Commissioner Mullins would unveil a plaque commemorating the centenary of the fire station and present national medals and long service medals to fire fighters.

He said a historical display featuring old photos, equipment and uniforms will take people back in time to the "earlier" days of fire fighting.
