Learning Permaculture with Nick Ritar

As one half of Milkwood Permaculture, Nick shares his passion and knowledge of working with the local environment with hundreds of students each year, teaching people keen to explore a different way of living, in both an urban or a rural environment.

Nick encourages his students to embrace a more sustainable lifestyle; one embodied by permaculture; to be actively engaged in their local community, building self-reliance towards a local food economy.

Nick and his partner Kirsten said goodbye to their life as artists in Melbourne, and are now situated on a rural property on the south coast of NSW. Nick and Kirsten’s dream was to create a place for their family that was more in touch with both the natural world and with where their food was coming from.

WHAT IS MILKWOOD?

As well as offering an array of courses and workshops - from permaculture design, mushroom cultivation, fermentation - to a host of other useful courses - Milkwood also provides free online resources as well as professional start-up skills.

Milkwood’s motto is “No chemicals and no excuses. Just good, thoughtful, innovative and effective design for the needs of our species.”

NICK’S INTRODUCTION TO PERMACULTURE DESIGN COURSE

Milkwood offers an introduction and certificate in Permaculture and Design, where students can learn how to apply permaculture principles in their home, garden, apartment or farm.

The course covers the basics of designing resilient systems with permaculture principles; energy cycling, nutrient cycling, animal systems, veggie growing systems, and how to retrofit your existing habitat to become a haven of organic food and low-energy living.
