The warmer weather means sweet and juicy peaches, nectarines, plums and apricots are ripe for the picking, all across the country.

Whether you chop it up to make a colourful fruit salad, or enjoy it on its own, there's no denying that stonefruit is an Aussie summer staple.

Dietitian Jemma O’Hanlon says that apart from being delicious, stonefruit is also low GI, so helps you feel fuller for longer.

"Stonefruit are a great snack as they help keep the immune system strong and boost energy levels while being low in kilojoules," she adds. "Stonefruit are versatile - they can be thrown into your morning smoothie, tossed through a salad or simply enjoyed on their own."

Selecting the right one

When it comes to picking out the best fruit, it can be hard to know what to look for.

With stonefruit, keep an eye out for the ones that give slightly under pressure from your finger when pressed. They should have a sweet fragrance with minimal bruising, too.

Top storage tips

Ensure your stonefruit is kept at room temperature until it reaches its desired ripeness.

If you'd like to speed up the ripening process, simply place your stonefruit in a brown paper bag with a banana or apple. Once it's ripe enough, pop it into the fridge.

Getting the best out of your fruit

Most people will eat their stonefruit straight from the fridge. Instead, remove it from the fridge an hour before you want to eat it.

Eating stonefruit at room temperature means you'll get the best flavour.
