My Life in France star, Sarah Sharratt, shares her best tips for navigating a French food market.
Sarah Sharratt relocated to the French countryside with her family and has slowly been discovering the amazing habits and culinary culture of her new community.
Here she shares her top three tips for shopping at the markets like a true Frenchman (or woman!).
Look for long lines
As with many fresh food markets, the most popular stall holder is often a safe bet. It's more likely their produce is a winner with those who know the markets best. As Sarah explains, the French are "fiercely loyal" to their food supplier, and will dedicate the time to finding out who has the best produce.
Don't be afraid to touch
While Sarah admits she's been yelled at a few times for touching produce, she knows that most French people expect nothing less. "Any good vendor is expecting you to touch what you buy," Sarah explained. "After all, they don't know, [if] you want that pear to eat tonight or [if you're] baking a cake with it tomorrow."
Get the lay of the land
Don't immediately stop and shop at the first stall - even though you may be tempted! Do a lap and scout for the best stalls.
