Coffee grows exclusively in tropical and sub-tropical regions with Brazil the world’s largest producer of coffee.
South America, South Africa, Vietnam and surrounding Asian countries are also big producers.
A small amount of coffee is grown in Australia, mostly in northern Queensland and northern New South Wales.
There are many coffee variations but for trade purposes the Arabica and Robusta are the most important and well known.
Apart from growing and farming the coffee bean, blending and roasting are very important stages in the coffee process before brewing and consuming.
Roasted coffee beans should always be sold in the highest quality packaging. Double-foiled bags with a one-way valve (to release the gases from the coffee), is the most ideal way to package coffee for retail purposes.
Coffee beans (or ground coffee for that matter) should also be correctly stored at home for longer lasting freshness and quality assurance.
The enemies of coffee are heat, extreme cold (please don’t store in the freezer), sunlight, air and contaminating odours.
Always store your coffee in its original packaging or place into a dry and clean airtight container.
Keep in the pantry or somewhere at room temperature away from the elements mentioned above.
Packaged coffee beans usually have a longer shelf life than pre-ground coffee, simply because the elements that effect the freshness of the coffee is slowed down due to the natural oils being retained longer.
Pre-ground coffee is prone to dry out faster and should be stored in the best possible conditions.
