The Danes are very lay back and very ‘Australian-like’, but it's coupled with this northern European efficiency thing, must always be on time, must never keep anyone waiting...which may go to explain why all over Copenhagen there are a whole bunch of dual function cafes opening up.
The Laundromat Café
The Laundromat café is that rare mix of retro-chic cafe and launderette. Lovely wooden floors and walls are lit by seventies style orange plastic lights. Lounge music keep the hip clientele happy while the washing machines groove away in a room of their own, visible through the glass. The menu includes succulent salads, cheese plates, burgers, steaks, pasta and fish soups. By the time you've reached the spin cycle it's time for home made cakes. Draught Carlsberg and Hoegaarden are available to assist with spinning.

Ole Troelso tells me that Danish café culture has grown prolifically in both numbers and culture since 1976 when the first French café opened in Copenhagen (café Sommersko). This was the beginning of a revolution in café culture, and that Danes now enjoy all kinds of coffee – it took a while for them to get used to drinking the small strong espressos as they were used to drinking coffee in a big mug – very milky. Since Sommersko opened hundreds and hundreds of copies have evolved.
Café Sommersko is a large and very popular place, almost legendary in Copenhagen. You'll find a mix of shoppers, tourists, businesspeople and locals, and a menu just as varied. Breakfast is served Monday through Friday, and brunch on weekends. Besides the standard café fare, they serve delicious low-fat and vegetarian options. Try the oriental flatbreads filled with vegetables and/or meat with yoghurt dressing. Prices are a bit higher than most cafés, and there's sometimes a wait during peak hours.

Barbarellah is more than just a café, it’s a bar, it’s a clothes shop, an interiors shop, and a music space with a live DJ playing all day and all night. This is where you definitely go to get that different experience with your coffee. It’s not unusual for people to drink a cocktail while they try on clothes or break into dance as they are sipping on their latte. All the furniture in the café is for sale from the chair that you’re sitting on to the painting on the wall. Even the bar is for sale.
