From wedding cakes, to mince pies, Christmas pudding, and hot cross buns - this week it's all about those special celebration bakes.
We’re starting with an Easter classic, Signature hot cross buns.
Dave’s going for some unconventional flavours and techniques, pairing matcha with red beans and using the tangzhong method for his dough:
Matt claims he’s “never really tasted anything like it”, which gives Dave an edge over Barb’s fig, walnut and candied orange peel buns, Claudia’s boozy prune, apricot and orange zest buns with rum ball centres, and Chris’s cranberry, white chocolate, and cinnamon buns.
Matt’s responsible for this week’s Technical Challenge, and it’s a doozy: 24 mince pies. The challenge will be finding anyone who actually wants to eat mince pies.
Barb’s rustic decoration costs her the Technical win, with Chris coming out on top and Dave and Claudia doing about as well as the taste of mince pies (which is to say: badly).
It’s an even playing field coming into the truly genius Showstopper Challenge. If you’re planning a wedding, or even if you’re just planning to shove some cake into your mouth in the near future, can we propose that you have a crack at each and every one of these Showstopping masterpieces? Follow the recipes at home:
- Dave's floating elegance cake
- Claudia's feathered lovebirds
- Chris's wedding cake
- Barb's wedding cake
The race to the Grand Final was always going to be tense, but things get super sad when it becomes clear that it’s between besties Barb and Chris as to who is going home. Unfortunately for Chris, his wedding cake flavours couldn’t quite match the other three. We’re not crying, YOU’RE CRYING!
Chris says he came on Bake Off “to prove that real men can bake”, and he’s more than done that.
And speaking of men, Dave has finally grabbed his very first Star Baker title.
Find all the bunting you can, grab your finest waistcoat and dust off your best Maggie Beer-inspired jewellery, because next time, Claudia, Barb, and Dave will be battling it out for the Bake Off crown.
