7 Unusual Food Combinations

There are many things in the world that when brought together, seem like a surprising match. And food is no exception! Certain pairings create delicious flavours that can surprise and delight with ease.

Here are a few favourites. What are yours?:

1. Vegemite and avocado

Who would ever have thought that the unique, undeniably delicious tang of Australia's most-loved breakfast spread, would be the ideal match for the creamy, fresh taste of Australian avocados? Slathered over toast, the combination of these two popular spreadables has given the nation a breakfast treat that rivals the age-old favourite of cheese and tomato.

2. Bacon and maple syrup

Bacon and maple syrup is a combination that creates a flavour explosion in your mouth. With the crispy, succulence of the bacon and the sweet burst of maple syrup, this flavour combination marries breakfast and dessert in every mouthful.

3. Strawberries and balsamic vinegar

Balsamic vinegar is normally reserved for salads or Italian food, however paired with sweet, juicy strawberries, the flavour sensation created is rich and intense. Whilst the pairing of fruit and vinegar sounds more like a recipe for cleaning products, these two items paired together enhances the sweetness of the strawberries and delivers bags of flavour.

4. Potato chips and bread

Sandwiches shouldn't be crunchy unless they're jam-packed full of fresh salad produce. However,  exchange your carrots for chips and sprinkle them between slices of bread,  and you have a surprisingly delicious sandwich full of crunch that is lip-smackingly salty.

5. Chicken and waffles

Surprisingly, chicken goes great with biscuits, so why not with waffles? The sweet and savoury balances out well, making it either a breakfast or dinner option. Either way, we'll take another order, perhaps with a glass of bubbly.

6. Smoked salmon and yoghurt

If you're bored of the usual yoghurt and muesli combination, then say hello to salmon and yoghurt. An innovative way to get your hit of protein, the creamy, savoury and salty mix makes it a delicious treat or light meal.

7. Chocolate and cola

Two favourite sweet treats, matched together, equals every birthday party and trip to the carnival, all rolled into one delicious bite. The sweet, smooth texture of the chocolate, paired with the fizzy, tongue-tingling bite of Cola, creates an explosion of flavour in every mouthful.
