5 places in Sydney serving beautiful food

People don't just want food that tastes great, it has to look good too!

They say you eat with your eyes and it couldnt be more true for the new wave of active social media users capturing pictures of their food.

While some restaurants and cafes are good at either making food taste good or making it look good, there are some who are getting the combination just right.

Here are five of the best places in Sydney to get food that tastes just as good as it looks. 

1. Flower Child

A shopping centre is not necessarily where you might expect to find beautiful food, but Flower Child has got good genes in that it's related to The Grounds of Alexandria. The line to get in is long, but once you're in, service moves fast. There is a delicious crispy skin Tasmanian salmon served with pea tendrils, sous vide fennel, green apple, cranberries, dill, walnuts, radish and freekah with a flavoursome horseradish tapenade and apple cider vinaigrette.

But the prettiest dish has got to be the Flower Child French toast with banana mascarpone, slices of banana, dark chocolate crumbs, candied pecans, berries, salted butterscotch sauce and maple syrup. Yum!

Tip: Put your name down ahead of time and then do your shopping!

2. Chimichuri, Chatswood

Chimchuri started off its life as a South American cafe, but has now morphed into a modern Australian cafe. There is some elaborate plating here, especially for a cafe. The French toast has to be seen to be believed. It's three towers of crispy French toast filled with Nutella, lychee ganache and berry coulis and there are also edible flowers, toasted marshmallows, Persian fairy floss and a mini jar of Nutella.

And for something savoury, try the lamb cutlet burger on a black bun with a delicious onion jam, coleslaw and a mint yoghurt sauce.

Tip: You can bring your dog here! The main part of the cafe is made up of a sunny patio area.

3. Cuppa Flower

First, the bad news. Don't even bother visiting Cuppa Flower on a weekend unless you arrive at the crack of dawn or you don't mind queueing. Cuppa Flower specialises in highly-Instagrammable food and drinks that appeal particularly to those who love everyting cute and colourful.

A latte may sport a bear face and cakes have Totoro faces. But while the food is very pretty it is also very tasty. The pitaya bowl is a colourful fruity bowl filled with kiwifruit, blueberries, muesli, roasted coconut, pumpkin and almonds with pureed pink dragonfruit, while the Cuppaflower benedict has two poached eggs, bacon and hollandaise sauce with beetroot and potato patties, and avocado.

Tip: There are two locations: Mascot and Waterloo but only Waterloo has the sought-after Totoro Swiss roll cake.

4. Aqua S

Whomever thought of the cloud background on the walls at Aqua S has got to feel a measure of pride every time one of their soft serves are photographed being gripped by a hand in front of this wall. The flavours at Aqua S change every day, but they tend towards Asian-style flavours.

They could be anything from Ribena & Belgian chocolate to a matcha latte and  lychee.

Tip: The fairy floss is cute for photos, but not practical (I know because I tried it and got it all over me)!

5. Concrete Jungle

Kensington Street's newest cafe is Concrete Jungle, a light-filled glass box of a cafe with seriously colourful, but tasty dishes. Not only is it pretty and colourful but it's healthy too - a triple whammy!

If you throw a dart at anything on the menu, it will more than likely taste good. We tried six dishes and loved them all. For an absurdly gorgeous dish try the Blue Magik smoothie bowl or the dragonfruit chia pudding. For those who need more protein, there's the wagyu breseola with poached eggs, roasted broccolini, leek and kale with green tahini or the grass fed sirloin with caramelised cacao, roasted cauliflower florets, king brown mushroom and chestnut crisps, as well as a smooth cauliflower puree.

Tip: Sit inside, the outside can get windy and cold, especially during winter.
