10 Things you should always have in the cupboard

1.) Sea salt


Any good food needs seasoning and nothing lifts your cooking like good-quality sea salt.

2.) Olive oil


How did we ever cook without it? I have a basic cheap one for all cooking, and save a special one for drizzling on salads.

3.) Onions and Garlic


No matter where in the world, they form the basis of most savoury dishes from all cuisines.

4.) Lemons


Great food is about a balance of flavour, and dash of lemon juice or a little lemon zest can be that missing magic.

5.) Pasta


Wholemeal and white - pasta is the great fast food, and I really love wholemeal these days, for its nutty qualities.

6.) Rice


Jasmine, brown, basmati, arborio - with these four, you have the arsenal of rice. It's hard to believe it used to be only short or long grain!

7.) Great-quality Bread


The staff of life - and try and make sure it has no nasty trans-fats!

8.) Soy sauce


The quintessential seasoning for Asian cooking.

9.) Dijon mustard (unopened)


The perfect steak is not complete without mustard.

10.) Tinned tomatoes


I often think tinned tomatoes are my most-used ingredients, a great way to add instant flavour to dishes.
